Hardwood floors are one of the most beautiful — and most misunderstood — surfaces in the home. Treated correctly, they last a lifetime and gain character with age. Treated incorrectly, they warp, dull, and deteriorate in ways that are expensive and sometimes impossible to reverse.

The Biggest Mistake: Too Much Water

Wood and water are natural enemies. Excess moisture seeps into the grain, causes boards to swell and warp, and creates conditions for mold growth beneath the surface. Never mop hardwood with a soaking wet mop. Your cleaning tool should be barely damp — if it drips, it's too wet.

What to Use — and What to Avoid

  • ✅ Use a microfiber flat mop barely dampened with a pH-neutral hardwood cleaner
  • ✅ Vacuum weekly with a soft-bristle attachment to remove grit before it scratches
  • ✅ Dry any spills immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth
  • ❌ Never use steam mops — the heat and moisture cause irreversible damage
  • ❌ Avoid vinegar — it's acidic and dulls the finish over time despite popular belief
  • ❌ Never use all-purpose sprays not formulated for hardwood
  • ❌ Avoid oil soaps like Murphy's Oil — they leave a residue that builds up over time

The Correct Cleaning Routine

Daily maintenance is light: a dry microfiber dust mop to capture dust and pet hair. Weekly, vacuum with a soft attachment paying attention to edges and between boards where grit accumulates. Monthly, do a damp mop using a hardwood-specific cleaner, working with the grain and ensuring the floor dries quickly.

Dealing With Scratches and Scuffs

Minor scuffs from shoes or furniture can often be buffed out with a clean cloth and a small amount of hardwood floor polish. Deeper scratches may require a touch-up marker matched to your floor's stain color. For significant damage, a professional refinishing job — sanding and recoating — is the proper solution, not something that should be DIY'd.

Prevention is Everything

  • Use felt pads on the bottom of all furniture legs — check and replace them annually
  • Place area rugs in high-traffic zones, especially entryways and under dining tables
  • Keep pet nails trimmed — they're one of the leading causes of hardwood scratches
  • Maintain indoor humidity between 35-55% to prevent seasonal wood movement
  • Never drag furniture across hardwood — always lift
